Architecture Overview

Great homes start with good conversations. Room is a joint architecture and interiors studio, and we design wholly considered homes from the inside out, starting with the way you live.

Whether you’re dreaming of a light-filled extension, a loft conversion, a barn conversion, a careful renovation of a period home or a new house from scratch, the journey from idea to reality can feel daunting. There are decisions to make, rules to navigate and a fair amount of jargon along the way.

We design around the way you live, so we take the time to understand your family, your routines, what you love about the way you live now and what drives you up the wall, before a single line is drawn. We’ll also be straight with you about what’s achievable within your budget, your site and the planning rules. If something won’t work, we’ll say so, and suggest a better route to the same destination.

What sets us apart is that we are architects and interior designers under one roof. Even when you don’t need our full interior design service, that shared knowledge and creativity feeds into every project, so the final details, from joinery to lighting to materials, are considered at the outset. Honest materials sit at the core of what we do, and the result is understated, timeless and effortlessly functional.

Our architectural services cover every stage, and you can use as many or as few as you need:

  • Feasibility: testing what’s possible on a site or property before you commit.

  • Planning: shaping a strategy and guiding your application through to a decision.

  • Construction Drawings: the detailed information needed for building regulations, and for a builder to price and build accurately.

  • Listed Buildings: sensitive, informed work to listed buildings and homes in conservation areas.

  • Sustainable Design: homes that are efficient to run and designed with the environment in mind.

Based outside Bath, in Wiltshire, we work all over the UK, including the Home Counties, London, the Cotswolds and Devon, and have taken on projects as far afield as the Republic of Ireland and the Scottish Highlands. Distance is rarely a barrier: we combine site visits, video conferencing and research into local planning policy to guide a project from concept to completion.
